Happy New Year! After some much needed rest and practice time, I’m back in action this weekend with a SOLD OUT solo show at The Circle of Friends in Franklin, MA, opening for the lovely and talented Lori McKenna. I will, of course, be bringing my favorite bass player Craig Akin with me. Next week we’ll be joined by Pete Kennedy for another SOLD OUT show in NYC at Music on 4. Those guys always push me to new limits, so there’s no telling what will happen, except that it’ll be a blast. I feel like maybe I should book a few more solo gigs! It seems to be working out! If you don’t already have tickets to one of those, try coming out to Winterjam on 1/14 where I’ll be playing with a few of my favorite acts.

I am so grateful to find out that my CD “Hope” landed at #15 on the 2011 Folk DJ Chart! Red Molly landed at the #10 spot and snagged the #5 artist of the year slot too! For me, 2011 was the year for recording and releasing new material, both with the band and on my own. 2012 will be the year to practice my buns off, learn new techniques, practice, write a slew of new songs, and practice some more. Let’s get to it!

What a ride this year has been! I can’t even count the number of places I went with Red Molly. Then putting out a brand new solo CD AND a new Red Molly CD! Needless to say, I am really enjoying a little time off at home in beautiful Jersey City.

Reso-summit was the perfect inspiration to setup a regular practice routine at home. I’ve been working on ear training, scales all over the neck of my Dobro, figuring out melodies of my favorite songs, and trying to make my Dobro sound like a real voice. Today I even got back in the saddle for a little writing. Though I think I may have to write a dozen or more clunkers before the good ones come along.

I’ve got a few really fun solo shows coming up in January- including an unplugged NYC house concert that is always a blast (with Pete Kennedy and Craig Akin!), opening for Lori McKenna up in Franklin, MA, and doing my part at Winterjam 2012 in Westchester, NY. Hope to see you there! Happy Holidays everyone!

Well the new Red Molly CD Light in the Sky was released last month and is already doing great on the charts- #1 album and artist on Folk DJ for October, and debuting on the Americana Top 40 Chart at #31! We’ve got a tour of the mid-west and then our final hometown tour of the year. I’m off to Resosummit this month, to sing in the “Backing Up a Vocalist” workshops. It’s always so amazing to spend time with other Dobro players, learning from the best and going home with new ideas and lots of stuff to practice. This time I get to perform a bit too, with my friends Greg Booth and Orville Johnson in a one-hour song swap. Should be quite a hoot!

I’ll mark the end of my touring season with one final solo show at Perks & Corks in Rhode Island, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Marc Douglas Berardo and I split this show last year and had so much fun we decided to make it a tradition! Craig Akin will be joining us on upright bass this time and I’m hoping our favorite squeezebox player will show up too! I’ll never forget playing “Too Soon” with him last year- it gave me chills.

In other fun news, my solo CD Hope is now on Pandora! I hope you’ll add my name to your station there. Just for fun, I made a station with just my name, to see what other kinds of artists out there have similar music. It’s really amazing what those Pandora people come up with and I’ve already found several albums I need to get my hands on (like Kevin Welch’s You Can’t Save Everybody). How they manage to keep it free, I have no idea, but I’m grateful.

We can’t list Abbie Gardner in the local section any longer – she’s fast becoming a national treasure. Here’s yet another bluesy, soulful original set featuring her mellow yet terse vocals, amazing, world class dobro and lapsteel playing, and true roots sensibility. Gardner has used her time with Red Molly well, and she’s every bit as edifying on her own; the best part about this artist’s personal style is that she seems to not give a care about album deals or pop trends; she’s her own woman, making music that pleases her – and in turn, pleases everyone else in the process. That’s the very definition of soul. Don’t miss “Liar,” the type of bluestorch song that could send a priest out for bottle of scotch – it’s that joyously depressing.

JUL 5, 2011 Twangville

Abbie Gardner- Hope

by Eli Petersen in Reviews

5 Years, 3 Red Molly records, a duo record with Anthony da Costa, and a passel of tour dates have passed since Abbie Gardner’s last solo record, the comparatively sparse Honey On My Grave. Hope represents the maturation of one of the best artists in Americana music today. With a confidence that can only be earned, Gardner bursts out with a national steel guitar and a ballsy blues on the opening cut “Break It Slow.” It’s an unprecedented romp, fully of gnarly guitar lines and lyrics reminiscent of Lucinda Williams or Bonnie Raitt.

An engaging rhythm section and frequent cameo’s by Herb Gardner (Abbie’s jazz piano playing father), propel Hope forward at a roaring pace (in comparison to most “folk” records). Gardner herself claims virtuoso status with not only the dobro, but lap steel and national steel guitars (can you spell badass?). With her ability to write lines like “forget the mistletoe, because you’re the whole damn Christmas tree” (“Its Always You) and a pop sensibility that is frequently uncanny, Gardner displays a range and flexibility that stretches from old school folk, to jazz, to pop, to rock ‘n’ roll.

My favorite track on the record, however, is the title cut and its classic Gardner.

“my hope is a floosie/ she’s drunk and unruly/ dancing up on top of the bar/ she falls like a hammer/ and glasses that shatter/ like broken little pieces of stars/ I can’t stop/ I can’t choose/ I love/ I lose/ clear my head/ clear my sight/ it’s a curse/ it’s a fight/ I got no cause to believe/ but my hope just won’t leave/ oh I know I can’t win/ I give up/ I give in”

The song is a killer and recalls her best ballads with both Red Molly and Anthony da Costa. Featuring some gorgeous fiddle and the kind of subtle backing from the rhythm section that is simultaneously riveting and barely noticeable, “Hope” is a tour de force.

Abbie can be caught touring with Red Molly, pretty much everywhere in the U.S., so keep your eyes open and on this site. Also, check out Gardner’s solo site as well.

Abbie Gardner is better known at this time for her work in the Americana band Red Molly. She is both a comfortable and a very formidable player of Dobro, lap steel and National bottleneck guitar. She is also one-third of the female harmony in the trio. On this break away for that group work she enlists both her father, Herb Gardner (piano) and her sister, Sarah Gardner (organ), as well as Ben Wittman (drums) and Craig Akin (upright bass). The songs range from hard blues to jazzy vamps to folk songs. Her voice has both the emotional and technical range to sing it all, though there seems more range and joy in her voice when she is singing as part of an ensemble. She does a number of songs with fellow vocalists Robby Hecht, as well as Laurie MacAllister (also a member of Red Molly) and longtime collaborators Fred Gillen Jr. and Beaucoup Blue (David & Adrian Mowry).

On this disc there are eleven tunes and Abbie wrote eight of them and they don’t squeeze into any one particular genre. One of the best starts off the disc and it is the one song where are slide guitar work is truly featured up front in the mix. It sounds like it might belong to Son House or maybe be a Ry Cooder tune but it is however credited to her, Break It Slow. Some of the other cuts show blues influences but this one cut really shows her mastery of the slide guitar—she is listed as playing both the National and lap steel guitar on this cut—and it does stand out. The rest of the disc is good however her playing is much more back in the mix, and thus much more subtle, which is a shame because she truly cuts lose here and grabs the listener. The feeling like this doesn’t come back until the last cut, Too Soon which again is a slow blues tune that opens with some nice work on the National guitar. She seems to truly stand out with the blues. She has a wonderful voice and has done a masterful job with finding singers that compliment and support her voice. She is someone I intend to follow up on and see what she brings to Red Molly and look at future solo work to see what directions it takes.

Abbie Gardner – Hope

New Jersey homegirl Abbie Gardner is back down at the dirty, dusty crossroads of desire and redemption. Coming five years and three Red Molly albums after her last solo CD, Hope is Abbie Gardner’s latest offering. Released this summer, the CD features eight original tunes, three covers and her versatile vocal talents are backed by her three distinct styles of slide guitar, including some square neck Dobro, lap steel and National bottleneck. The compositions cover everything from desolate heartache to reflective courage of second chances.

Gardner’s gritty lap steel crashes beautifully into the cello work of Emily Hope Price, and folk guru Robby Hecht lends his voice to three distinct tracks as well. It’s great to see fellow Red Molly member Laurie MacAllister (vocalist, banjo god and guitarist) all over the disc as well. Longtime friends and collaborators Fred Gillen, Jr. and Beaucoup Blue also lend their characteristic voices on Hope.

The album kicks off in sizzling form as Gardner and band tear it up on “Break It Slow.” Featuring a laid back and dirty delta riff, “Break It Slow” bristles with raw and chirping acoustics as garner lays molasses thick melodies over the band. Single-lined elegance slips between seamless and fluid bass lines and stark, stripped down drum work. The topic is classic human denial as Gardner pleads, “If you break my heart, won’t you break it slow/Give me some time to watch you go.” This is the bittersweet recollection of love in the dusty rear view mirror of life.

“Liar” comes across like an October smoky mountain waltz. Bouncing slowly, it’s swept by snatches of drum brushes, upright bass and Gardner’s mid-ranged resonator wails. Gardner’s traditional country roots dig down deep as she uses simple, sweet melodies to connect the sad and forlorn verses of unrequited love.

“Comes Love” is yet another look into the unpredictable emotion of love and the quandary of how it can’t be undone, overdone or trumped. Dobro lines are intricate and voodoo dark. Pianos dance, helter skelter in and out of four on the floor drums and bass. Gardner is one of the most emotive players in the business and her talent at filling a song with sadness or, in this case, spooky and spitfire-fueled sass is unequaled. She literally talks through the guitar in the same way a singer blows through a melody. Her voice here is toned in the jazz moxy of the ‘40s. Think Cab Calloway meets Diane Krall and Phil Leadbetter and you’ll get the point.

Title track “Hope” is an introspective, rose-colored look into the wide-open target of the abandoned love, and the unrealistic expectations of those that always think that salvation is right around the corner. Cellos wind up warmly, waltzing Gardner into the poignant line, “But fear thunders closer, he’s an angry composer, armed with a thousand violins/He drowns out the sound, of what I thought I found/And I’m a fool, I’m a fool because I believe again.”

“Bang Bang” is a souped-up, tongue-in-cheek look at the tangled web of infidelity and the results of said acts. Revenge scenarios take “aim” at putting things right in the mind of the offended. Clever wordplays abound as Gardner fires off saucy lines like, “Bang, bang, bang went the gun and, bang, bang, bang, went my heart when he, bang bang with her and a baby’s on the way.” I love the organ, Dobro, drum sticks and the rubber-souled sounds of the upright bass. Gardner leaves no doubt in your mind when she cocks the chorus hammer with the ominous line, “I could aim for her, aim for him; teach ‘em both about the price of sin/I could aim for me, or walk away, but something wants to go bang today.”

Abbie really shows off her skills on “Do It,” a soul-fueled funk instrumental that includes the monster playing of bassist Craig Akin and syncopated, sharp groove of Ben Wittman. The trio circles and breaks out in turn. Gardner slides into the center ring with some coal-fired, open-keyed riffs and a barrage of bar-bending wails that would make even the great Jerry Douglas take notice. This is what it’s all about folks; having fun with what you do. Pure musicianship rules the days on this spectator’s song.

If there was a commercial cut on Hope, it would be the Nashville contemporary sounds of “Nellie.” Gardner shows why she’s more than just another pretty six-stringer when she unravels her magic on “Nellie.” With a warm, mid-range voice that cuts through the instrumentation like hot butter, she’s in the same big league as Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift or Martie McGuire and Emily Robison from the Court Yard Hounds.

Hope has a total of 11 songs crafted from the mind and memory of one of the best musicians around. And as good as she is, Gardner never loses sight of the song or sacrifices compositional quality for fretboard gymnastics. Her playing is a melodic interpretation of each song, not a vehicle to showcase her lightening fast skill, although she’s got moves in that area as well. This self-produced set of gems is a must have for musicians and music fans alike. It is an educational romp through contemporary talent and traditional-fused style.

Hope demonstrates the capabilities of an artist that has figured out how to embrace emotion, pain and triumph, and put it to music for the rest of us to feel. For more on Abbie Gardner and Hope, head over to her website at abbiegardner.com

I write to you from Sisters, Oregon, in the heart of the Deschutes National Forest. Tomorrow I get to play two sets at the Sisters Folk Festival with Red Molly, but today I get to just enjoy the woods! It’s so peaceful and quiet here. The town is named after the Three Sisters mountains that dominate its western skyline, which makes this female trio feel pretty well at home.

It’s great to have a day of rest here and there. Things are really gearing up for the release of Red Molly’s latest CD Light in the Sky on October 4th. We’re planning a big CD-stuffing party at my place to get copies out to about 450 of our favorite DJs around the country and abroad. The new stickers arrived last week and new T-shirts are on their way. Every Tuesday until the release, we’re sharing something fun with our fans via Facebook and our website.

Later this month we’ll head down to North Carolina, to play shows in some of the areas most most hard-hit by hurricane Irene. I truly hope we can give those good folks a little break from the stress and work they’ve been dealing with.

Until then,

Abbie

I don’t know who said March was a lion. I think it should be July. It was a whirlwind for me- going from Maine to Falcon Ridge in NY and then down to Swannanoa, NC for my second year of teaching melody writing and “getting unstuck” for songwriters. What an amazing month! I am well on my way to “elite” frequent flyer status! I’ve already been to California this month and really look forward to my first trip to Kansas next week. :)

Friday was the U.S. release of the Indian blockbuster film Aarakshan. Unlike most Indian film music, this score includes sweet sounds of the Dobro and banjo (as well as acoustic guitar) by yours truly. I have yet to hear or see the whole thing, but I’m quite excited to make my film music debut!

On the T.V. front, my song “Break it Slow” (the first track off my latest CD Hope) has been chosen for the pilot of new show on A&E called “Fishmongers.” It is sort of like Deadliest Catch, meets Hard Core Pawn, meets Goodfellas with humor that feels like it is ‘live from the Borscht belt’. Holy cow. How could this show not be a huge hit? I might actually have to buy a television. (Just kidding)

Reviews for Hope keep rolling in and making me jump up and down with happiness. People in the biz tell you not to read your own press, but sometimes it’s nice!

And finally, at the home front, I’ve started reading music again. In high school it was my dream to become a classical flutist. That dream has changed shape over the years, and I never thought reading music would ever be something I do again. Dobro music isn’t ever really written out (except with TAB) and I don’t have any Dobro player friends who read music or find any need to. But as I was looking for creative ways to learn my instrument better, Craig (my bass player) suggested I try sight-reading my old flute books. I gave him every excuse and reason it would be too hard- I mean you have to look at the Dobro, how can you read music at the same time? Well after all the excuses, I went ahead and tried it. He was right. It’s amazing. I’m learning so much and at the same time I feel like I got a little bit of that dream back. I LOVE reading music. It’s incredibly fulfilling. And yes, I’m learning the notes all the way up the fretboard too, but at this point that’s almost an afterthought because it’s just so FUN. Thanks Craig. :)
