October 2009

Back in the studio with Red Molly! So exciting! Our third full-length album is well underway, though we only started on the last day of September. Everyday I take the PATH train from Grove Street to the World Trade Center. I walk up from the lower levels of that station that is constantly changing, several floors down, but the sun streams in and the concrete is still in pieces, some old and some new. With my Dobro on my back, I pass tourists who stare at that hole and take pictures. And I walk up out of it, not needing to look because it’s still a bruise for me. Maybe when it’s fixed that part of me will be fixed, too. I walk up about 10 blocks to the studio and sing, listen, play, listen, and listen some more. Then 8-10 hours later, I walk back, with all those sounds in my head and all of that hope in my heart.

About the record itself, it’s been such a thrill for me to have my Dad play piano. My song Jezebel, in particular, is coming out great. He played so many good things, it’s tough to choose which takes to keep! But as he says, he never plays the same thing once. Ha.

I’m completely sold on playing and recording with a good drummer, too. We were lucky enough to snag Ben Wittman for the first day of tracking and the man is a human metronome! Not to mention one of my favorite bass players, Mike Weatherly. This is the third record I’m making with him. Wow!

My next challenge is to figure out lap steel parts and record them at the end of the month. Duke Levine took care of the lap steel parts on “Love and Other Tragedies,” while I watched and tried to soak it all up. This time around it’s up to me and I couldn’t be more excited to try my hand at it.

On November 14th (when the record is done) I have a solo gig at one of my favorite places-
The Postcrypt Coffeehouse in NYC. No mics, no cables, just some stone walls, candles, and songs made from scratch.
